A towering work on the theme of the night. This is a fascinating and explosive kaleidoscope in which the sense of collage borders on excess! Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 is certainly the most bombastic of all. The asymmetrical architecture of the symphony is remarkable: in the middle, a grand scherzo set to a waltz rhythm, two Nachtmusik (night music) themes before and after the scherzo, and two allegros to open and close the symphony, for a total of five movements. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Conductor Program
