Mahler: Night Song

Monday May 12, 2008 7:30 pm

Great Concert

Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier — Place des Arts

Participants

Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, conductor

For this final concert of the season the Orchestre Métropolitain is joined by several additional wind and percussion instruments, and by a guitar and a mandolin. The concert features Mahler’s monumental, nocturnally-inspired symphony.

Programme

  • Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 7

Description

This is a fascinating and explosive kaleidoscope in which the sense of collage borders on excess! Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 is certainly the most bombastic of all. Its asymmetrical architecture is remarkable: in the middle, a grand scherzo set to a waltz rhythm, two Nachtmusik (night music) themes before and after the scherzo, and two allegros to open and close the symphony, for a total of five movements.
