“The only Sixth, in spite of the Pastoral!” (Alban Berg). It is an ideal way to end the 2006-07 season with meaning and emotion.

Programme

  • Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 6, “Tragic”

Description

With its uncompromising march rhythms, its outcries of despair, and its fearful dénouement, Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, or “Tragic” Symphony was certainly the composer’s darkest work. And yet… It was also one of Mahler’s most personal compositions, and given the totality of his output, a necessary descent into Hell before the light and hope that infused his subsequent works. The “Tragic” is capable of providing audiences with the most intense and essential symphonic experiences of their lives. It is an ideal way to end the season with meaning and emotion.
