Description

The 2006-07 season marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Montreal Arts Council (formerly the Montreal Urban Community Arts Council). For this occasion, the Orchestre Métropolitain pays tribute to Montreal’s four founding nations, whose emblems appear on Montreal’s coat of arms: France (Debussy); England (Britten); Ireland (Doolittle); and Scotland (Maxwell-Davies) are each represented with a work. Among other remarkable features, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear bagpipes given centre stage in the context of an orchestral performance. In addition, an original work commissioned by the Conseil des Arts de Montréal (CAM) will receive its premiere performance. Also on the program: Kaléidoscope, by the great Montreal composer Pierre Mercure who died prematurely at age 39. The warm brilliance of Mercure’s orchestration in this early composition has made it the most frequently-performed Quebec work on the international scene.
