A concert especially devoted to Haydn’s londonian symphonies heralds a new venture in the Orchestra’s program; also, this magnificent concerto to end the year marking the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth.

Programme

  • Joseph Haydn, Symphony No. 93
  • Joseph Haydn, Symphony No. 104, “London”
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 20

Description

Haydn epitomized the Classical style. Two concerts especially devoted to Haydn herald a new venture in the Orchestra’s program for the next few years: to perform the complete cycle of the composer’s twelve “London” symphonies. And to end the year marking the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, the Orchestre Métropolitain welcomes the talented pianist David Jalbert to perform this magnificent concerto, the only minor-key composition among the composer’s twenty-seven works in the genre. A dramatic piece whose breathless opening movement foreshadows the mighty works of Beethoven.

Discography: A selection by Yannick Nézet-Séguin

Always relevant, the admirable and one-time revolutionary work of Nikolaus Harnoncourt with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam remains the model for Classical interpretation which is at once vibrant and noble, in the performance of Haydn’s twelve last symphonies (Teldec/Warner 4509-92628). Legendary recordings of Mozart’s great D Major Concerto abound. Among them, the memorable recording by Andras Shiff with the great violinist and conductor Sandor Vegh stands out for the dialogue between piano and orchestra, the detailed attention paid to articulation and phrasing, and the depth of musical thought. In this year which marks Mozart anniversary celebrations, why not offer oneself the entire set of concertos? (Decca 448 140).
