Mahler: Night Song

The Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal presents Mahler: Night Song, Monday, May 12, 7:30 pm at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts.

The 2007-2008 season draws to a close with an Orchestre Métropolitain larger by several instruments, including cowbells, a guitar and a mandolin. A towering work on the theme of the night. This is a fascinating and explosive kaleidoscope in which the sense of collage borders on excess! Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 is certainly the most bombastic of all. The asymmetrical architecture of the symphony is remarkable: in the middle, a grand scherzo set to a waltz rhythm, two Nachtmusik (night music) themes before and after the scherzo, and two allegros to open and close the symphony, for a total of five movements.

The Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal offers a free pre-concert talk one hour before the concert given by OM’s violinist, Claudio Ricignuolo (Limited seating).

La Mer on the Atma classique label

This highly-anticipated recording of orchestral music inspired by the sea was made following a series of live performances of the work with the OM last year, which were well-received by audiences and critics alike: “… a fantastically vivid soundscape that the OM captured tenderly… Nézet-Séguin proved himself a capable purveyor of the French tradition. Pierre Mercure’s Kaléidoscope linked the program together… it was a treat to hear playing of such affectionate vibrancy as the OM devoted to Mercure’s [work].” (The Gazette, Montreal)

Bruckner 7 receives eloquent commentaires

This highly anticipated recording of Bruckner’s monumental 7th Symphony in E Major was made in September 2006, in Montréal’s Saint-Nom-de-Jésus Church, with the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The recording was produced under the Atma classique label.

The first critics to appear in London and in Toronto are particularly eloquent:

“This is the finest Bruckner I have heard from a young conductor (…) The Canadian in charge is 31 years old (…) He shapes the gigantic Adagio at the heart of this work, a tribute to the dying Wagner, with austere and respectful restraint. The performance as a whole is marked by a fastidious refusal to emote and a structural certainty that seems uncanny in a maestro of such little experience. (…) The opening of the finale is positively frisky and the playing of Montreal’s second orchestra is flawless, world-class. Nézet-Séguin is unquestionably the talent to watch. He makes his London debut at the South Bank of March 9; miss it if you dare.”

Norman Lebrecht, Evening Standard, London, February 7, 2007

“… Nézet-Séguin achieves both delicacy and power in Sympohony No. 7, the ‘Lyric’. The score sounds transparent and radiant. A remarkable achievement.”

John Terauds, Classical Music / Toronto Star, February 7 2007
